Relaxation Dentistry

Although advances in modern dentistry have made it possible to perform most dental work with little or no discomfort to the patient, many people remain nervous about visiting the dentist. Not only do we welcome patients who suffer from dental anxiety, we do whatever we can to make their experience as pleasant, comfortable, and stress-free as possible.

We are pleased to offer the option of relaxation dentistry. Through oral medications, patients will be able to undergo treatment without discomfort and with little or no memory of their time in the dental chair. Indeed, Dr. Juels can even perform multiple complex procedures during a single appointment while patients are relaxed, making this a potentially ideal option for those who require more extensive dental work. Rather than actually falling asleep, patients who opt for relaxation dentistry will remain in a conscious state during procedures; they remain coherent and aware of their surroundings, but are oblivious to the actual dental work that is taking place.

If you have avoided visiting the dentist out of anxiety or fear, or if you require more comprehensive restoration of your mouth, relaxation dentistry may be an excellent option for you. Please contact our dental practice today to schedule your initial consultation with Dr. Juels. She would be pleased to discuss your treatment options with you and determine whether you are a suitable candidate for oral relaxation medications.

Dental Implant Restoration

For patients who are missing one or more of their natural teeth, dental implants represent the most secure and natural method of tooth replacement currently available. Safe and extraordinarily strong, dental implants function as artificial tooth roots that provide a permanent foundation for replacement teeth. These remarkably versatile titanium implants can be used to support a single restoration, a bridge, and even a full set of dentures. Because they become a permanent, fully integrated part of the mouth, dental implants provide greater strength and security as well as a more natural feel than other methods of restoration. In addition, they allow patients to regain the beautiful, vibrant smiles they had with their natural teeth. Most patients emerge with a renewed confidence, knowing that they will be able to chew, speak, and smile with absolute ease once again.

Please contact our practice in St. Charles County to learn more about dental implants and how they can restore the health and beauty of your smile.

Root Canal Therapy

For patients who are experiencing tooth pain, a root canal may be needed. Not only is root canal therapy an effective treatment for tooth pain, it also gives patients an opportunity to salvage much of the structure of their original teeth. Whenever possible, it is always preferable to save rather than replace a natural tooth; therefore, it is important that patients seek dental treatment as soon as they begin to experience tooth pain.

Most tooth pain results from damage or infection to the pulp. The pulp resides within each tooth and supplies the tooth with nutrients. By removing this infected pulp and sealing the tooth with a strong, natural looking porcelain crown, our dentists are able to alleviate discomfort and preserve the tooth. Although many people cringe at the thought of undergoing root canal therapy, it is actually a safe, relatively painless procedure that produces both immediate and long-term oral health benefits. If necessary, root canal therapy can be performed while the patient is orally medicated, removing all possible anxiety from the procedure.

To inquire about root canal therapy, St. Louis, St. Charles, and St. Peters area residents are invited to contact our office today.

Dental Bridges

Fixed dental bridges are another effective way to replace one or more missing teeth. Comprised of an artificial tooth or teeth supported on either side by a porcelain crown, dental bridges restore both form and function to the mouth. Because bridges are fixed securely into place, they cannot fall out or be removed by hand, giving patients the ability to chew and speak with confidence. If preferred, dental implants can also be used to support a bridge for the strongest possible support. For more information about quality dental bridges, please contact our practice today.

TMD (Temporomandibular Disorder) Treatment

Disorders of the temporomandibular joint (TMD) can cause chronic facial, neck, and jaw pain, as well as severe headaches. Oftentimes, TMD is the result of clenching or grinding of the teeth, which can occur both during waking and sleeping hours. In many cases, patients are unaware that they are engaging in these actions. Thankfully, clenching can be minimized with the use of a plastic bite guard. During a single office visit, we can customize a clear-plastic device that fits over the two front teeth. This device is worn whenever patients are most prone to clenching or grinding their teeth, making these actions virtually impossible. Over time, the clenching reflex is suppressed and the pain associated with TMD is often reduced or eliminated.

Gingival (Gum) Recontouring

For patients with disproportionately “gummy” smiles or uneven gum lines, Dr. Juels offers gingival, or gum, reshaping. Symmetry and balance are essential to an aesthetically pleasing smile. Through gum reshaping, our dentists are able to remove the unnecessary gum tissue that is hiding the body of the tooth. The result is a tooth that looks longer without the need to alter its natural structure. Patients who undergo gingival reshaping face a very short healing period, after which they are able to flash their beautiful, balanced smile with pride.

Dentures – Complete and Partials

Dentures are artificial teeth set into a plastic framework that rests directly on the gums. There are two basic types of dentures: complete and partial. Complete dentures are used to replace teeth when no natural teeth remain. They rest directly on the gums and supporting bone. Conversely, partial dentures are used for patients with several (but not all) teeth missing. Partials are comprised of artificial teeth that are attached to a metal framework with clasps. These clasps fit snugly around selected natural teeth.

For patients interested in more permanent and secure tooth replacement, we may recommend implant-supported dentures.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Over the past 15 years, tooth-colored, or composite, fillings have replaced the traditional dark silver mercury amalgam fillings to repair areas of decay or fractured enamel on teeth. Tooth-colored fillings are more natural looking than amalgam fillings, blending inconspicuously with surrounding natural teeth. Because they bond to the tooth, composite fillings require less removal of healthy tooth structure. Ultimately, tooth-colored fillings are stronger, more durable, and more aesthetically pleasing than their metal counterparts, resulting in a brighter, more attractive smile and improved dental health.

For those patients who currently have silver mercury amalgam fillings, Dr. Juels would be pleased to remove them and replace them with composite fillings. For further information or to schedule an appointment, please contact our practice today.

Treatment for Gum Disease

Periodontal, or gum, disease occurs when bacteria build up beneath the gums, causing them to become irritated, often red and swollen. This inflammation (infection) of the gums can cause irreversible damage to both gum tissue and the bone structure that supports the teeth. As the teeth begin to shift out of place, pockets begin to form in the gums, severely compromising oral health. Signs of gum disease include frequent bleeding; persistent redness, swelling, and tenderness; chronic bad breath; pus draining out of the gums; a change in the way the teeth fit together during biting or chewing; and, for partial denture wearers, changes in the way their dentures fit.

Fortunately, if detected in its earliest stages, periodontal disease is relatively easy to control. It is essential to schedule regular professional cleanings and periodontal evaluations in order to ensure the continuing health of your gums. If infection is discovered early, all that is necessary is scaling and root planning along with an antimicrobial rinse. This treatment can significantly reduce the depth of infected pockets and help to prevent the progression of gum disease.

The most effective method of treating oral health problems is to prevent them before they start. Even if you feel that you are in perfect dental health, it is essential that you receive a professional tooth cleaning every six months, if not more frequently. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Juels, please contact our office today.
